Niels Ovesson Hofman-Bang was born in Viborg 30 August 1915, a son of Ove Malling Hofman-Bang (1873-1940). He married Ester Simoni, a daughter of office manager Emil Simoni (died in 1962) and Ellen, born Hoeck (died in 1965). Ester Hofman-Bang passed away in 1999. They had two sons, Claus (born in 1946) and Peter (born in 1949). Niels Ovesson Hofman-Bang died of cancer in Copenhagen on 13 June 2007.
He graduated as Student in Viborg in 1934, became Civil Engineer in 1940 and dr. phil. in 1952. He was employed at the Polytechnical School (KLA) during the years 1940-1943, then moved on to the Nordiske Kabel- and Traadfabrikkers metallurgical laboratory until 1944. He returned to KLA soon thereafter and became assistant in 1953 and associate professor in inorganical analysis in 1954. In 1958 he was promoted to department manager and was professor between 1960 and 1980. He studied in the USA during 1946. He held a number of positions in various chemical and ploytechnial institutions over the years. He was a member of the board at the Danish Technical Museum from 1979 and in the L'Association Franco-Danoise pour la Recherce et les Echanges Scientifiques as of 1970. He wrote several theses including "The lodine-Azide Reaction" in 1952.
Niels Ovesson Hofman-Bang took the overall responsibility in managing the Hofman-Bang family research and produced the booklet "Slaegten Hofman-Bang" together with Erik Hofman-Bang in 1986 - the basis for this website. He was the chairman of the board for the Hofmansgave Foundation, vividly looking after and preserving this beautiful estate and its commercial success.
