According to many sources, including Dansk Biografisk Leksikon, 1933 and 1997 editions, there are two main streams of the Bang family - albeit inter-related - the Bang's from Vends Herred and the Bang's from Assens. The most well-known of the families is the one from Vends Herred on on the island of Funen in Denmark where the four brothers Poul, Jörgen, Hans and Henrik from Middelfart and Assens are mentioned together in 1547 (Dsk. Kancellireg. 1535-1550, page 347). Jörgen Bang is the starting point for the noble branch of the de Bang family. Thanks to help from Dr. Bryan Bang of Hamilton, New Zealand, and an article written by Fritz Schönwandt in Danmarks Adels Aarbog 1991-1993 ("Af Palle Oluf de Bang med en slaegtshistorisk inledning") has shed new light over the somewhat complex family connections of the Bang family. It is believed that the Hofman-Bang family is connected to Oluf Bang according to the chart below.
